Tauranga Bay and neighbouring Cape Foulwind offer numerous walks to motivate the mind, nourish the soul & revitalize the body.
On your front doorstep is Tauranga Bay, a half moon bay known for its increasingly popular surf break & the distinctive rocky outcrop of Wall Island.
A short stroll across the bay will lead you to the beginning of the Cape Foulwind walkway, home to a large breeding colony of New Zealand fur seal (Kekeno).
The Cape Foulwind walkway is a good two hour return trip on foot & will take you across impressive clifftops to the historic Cape lighthouse. Tauranga Bay Retreat offers a pick up or drop off service if motivation determines a one way trip!
An easy short excursion but probably our favourite is found at the end of the road past the Bay House cafe. This track will lead you around the rocky peninsula with extensive views both up and down the coast. It is an historical area with remnants of train tracks and rock quarrying activities of yesteryear. The point of the peninsula is a prime viewing spot for those magical West Coast sunsets and for the more adventurous it is possible to make your way right around the peninsula at low tide to the seemingly endless nine mile beach.
Nine Mile is another popular surf break with the locals and stretches 12km south to end at the mouth of the Okari River.
